We all want to be happy. Yet the stresses of daily life, the events in the world around us, and the ceaseless stream of our own thoughts, seem to always undermine, if not entirely extinguish, our ability to experience real lasting happiness. In this excerpt from a public talk at the School of Practical Philosophy, Mariam Safinia provides some useful reminders on how we can actually live a life of real happiness.

Friends of ours, whose son aged 29 had gone to Ghana to do volunteer work, heard last week that he had died under mysterious circumstances.
As soon as I heard the news, I called them in London. The daughter answered the phone and I realized that I didn’t really have anything helpful to say about the unexpected death of such a young person, except the usual expressions of consolation about loss, fortitude and prayers etc.

Afterwards, I sent an email to the parents who had been too distraught to speak on the phone. I said,

Life is an amazing show; we rejoice when babies are born, we mourn when people die and we live in the illusion that everything will always be there. The truth is that everything will come to pass, all those we love, everything we own and all that we believe.
Time eventually erases all traces of our existence; the only thing we can do is watch, witness and marvel at this changing show – at times joyous and often painful.

On Sunday, September 18th 2011, The School of Practical Philosophy invites all those interested in such matters to a talk entitled “Philosophy & Real Happiness”.

We all search for a happiness which is independent of external circumstances and one which is constant.

Is such a thing possible? Can it be available to any of us?

If you are interested, join us together with your friends and family, because you are cordially invited to a talk by Mariam Safinia entitled

PHILOSOPHY & REAL HAPPINESS

Following on from the Young Philosopher’s Club (for the 10 to 16 year olds) we wanted to address the next age group who may have already left home and not yet found their place in society.

To this end we have arranged a one day taster of Practical Philosophy.
Relationships, work, what constitutes success and living a purposeful life may be some of the issues which occupy the mind at this stage of life. To have access to time tested principles and a space to consider some of these questions could be just what some young people are looking for.

The day is organized by two young practical philosophers, themselves leading busy professional lives while investing wisely in self development. We hope this will appeal to our younger audience and initiate a taste and curiosity to know more and attend a full course in the near future.

This workshop is held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 17th 2011 at 5960 Stoneridge Drive, Pleasanton and at just $30 (including lunch) affords our young adults a taste of self-development and what the school can do to help them find their way in life.

Don’t delay, do sign up now – Contact us
